A New Chapter Begins — Our First Store in Åland, 2022

In 2022, LizArtworks opened its first Nordic storefront on Torrgatan 9 in Mariehamn, Åland — bringing African craftsmanship and colourful design to the streets of Scandinavia.

In 2022, after years of crafting, selling at markets, and building a creative brand in Uganda, LizArtworks made a bold leap across continents. We opened our very first store in the Nordic region — on Torrgatan 9 in Mariehamn, Åland. What began as a pop-up concept quickly became something more. The storefront windows, framed in the signature LizArtworks red, became a colourful beacon on the quiet Mariehamn street. Passers-by could see vibrant African beaded necklaces, handcrafted cosmetic bags in bold ankara prints, carved wooden figures, and an array of handmade treasures — all displayed with care and pride. The LizArtworks logo appeared on the glass for the first time in a Nordic setting, and it felt like a dream realised. This was no longer just a market stall or a temporary pop-up. It was a real, permanent space — a place where African heritage and Nordic life could meet every single day. For a brand born in Uganda's street markets and crafts villages, having a storefront in Åland was deeply meaningful. It represented years of hard work, creative resilience, and a belief that handmade, culturally rooted products have a place everywhere in the world. The Åland store also became a testing ground — a place to learn what Nordic customers loved, how to present African-inspired design in a new context, and how to build community in a completely different cultural landscape. The warm reception from the Mariehamn community confirmed what we had always believed: good design speaks across borders, and authentic craftsmanship resonates with people everywhere. This first store in Åland laid the foundation for everything that followed — including the move to Turku and the establishment of LizArtworks Finland OY in 2024. But it all started here, behind those red-framed windows on Torrgatan 9.
